[Updated with photos from this year’s race after the jump.]
This Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6, the CycleSmart International returns to Northampton’s Look Park for the 21st year of cyclocross racing.
Not sure what cyclocross racing is? It’s essentially cross country on bicycle. Imagine superfit professional cyclists on top notch bikes pedaling across Look Park’s grassy fields, through the volleyball sandpit, across the train tracks, then run up the steep grassy hill carrying their bikes on their shoulders. Oh, and there are the barriers they have to hop over either while still on the bike, or carry the bike across.
Over and over, lap after lap. For up to an hour.
My report on last year’s races CycleSmart International Rocks Look Park http://bit.ly/tZK0dk, has pictures and a further explanation cyclocross at Look Park. These races bring hundreds of racers, both professional an amateur, male and female and their supporters to Northampton. Some as young as 14. It really is quite an undertaking and a boon to the Northampton economy.
Go check out the 21st CycleSmart International at Northampton’s Look Park this weekend as high quality bike racing comes to Western Massachusetts.
