Today’s Daily Hampshire Gazette [subscription required], has a big article today on the completion of the 3/4 mile stretch of the Manhan Rail Trail which brings the trail through Easthampton, MA to the doorstep of Southampton, MA. I cycled the bike trail extension 2 weeks ago on a glorious Columbus Day in Western Massachusetts. My write-up and photos are in Manhan Rail Trail Update. This extension of the Manhan Rail Trail goes through a beautiful and scenic landscape.
A couple of interesting notes from the article: the bridge over the Manhan River might be open for bikes as soon as the first week of November; and a reminder that Southampton, MA is moving forward on exploring establishing the bike path through that town. Remember that Southampton and Westfield are the two missing links to uninterrupted bike trails from Massachusetts into Connecticut. Westfield’s plans are detailed in Westfield Columbia River Greenway Moves Forward.
A fuller picture of the history of the Southampton rail trail can be found in the post, Southampton Rail Trail Progress, especially in the comments section.
I hope you get to ride the Manhan Rail Trail extension while the leaves are in their full Fall color glory. Now that the bike path extension is complete, we can look forward to the Manhan River bridge coming on-line for a smooth uninterrupted bike ride from many parts of the Pioneer Valley.
