Pedal Poker Run to Support Valley CDC

There are many good things you can do on your bike. On Sunday, October 23, you can do some good for yourself and the Northampton area at the same time.

Valley Community Development Corp., Valley CDC, is sponsoring a bicycle Pedal Poker Run event to raise funds in support of their community building and raising efforts. The event runs from Noon to 4 p.m., and starts and ends at Florence Savings Bank’s parking lot in Florence, MA, right behind the bank headquarters building on MA Route 9.

The Pedal Poker Run event runs like this:

Pedal Poker is a fun game where bicyclists, runners, and walkers visit five checkpoints along the bike path, receiving a card at each. After gathering a full hand, the participants with the best poker hands at the end of the game win.

These poker run events are quite popular, and in fact, Steph’s Wild Ride held in the Spring is a poker run event as well. This would be a chance to try out your poker skills in the beautiful surroundings of the Norwottuck and Manhan Rail Trails in Northampton and Hadley, MA. Because the ride is only 10 miles and mainly on the rail trail, it would seem to be a good one for younger riders to participate in.

Event registration is $25 before Oct. 23, and $35 the day of the event. Riders are encouraged to raise at least $100.

Ok, so what’s the good you can do for yourself? Well besides ride one of the most scenic stretches of rail trail around, you could win a prize! Prizes at the event for the poker hands include a new Giant bike worth $700 and an Apple iPad!

The good you can do for others? Help raise funds to support Valley CDC’s work:

Valley CDC seeks to empower low and moderate income people and minorities to control and improve the quality of their lives. We accomplish this through the development of affordable housing, providing economic opportunities and encouraging community leadership.

This should be lots of fun. More information and pre-registration can be found at the Valley CDC’s website.

Ride it if you can.
