Northampton Bike Breakfast Planning Underway

One of the highlights of Bike Week in Northampton, MA, is the bike breakfast, held this year on Wednesday, May 18.

At the Bike Breakfast there’s always lots of smiles and good food donated by local businesses, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. There’s a whole lot of cycling joy that morning as folks share their love of cycling before popping off to work. One of my favorite things about Bike Breakfast is seeing kids stop by on their way to school. Several schools in Northampton are easily accessible by bike path. Students, and staff, use them to get to school.

This year’s  coordinator, Jim Desmond, describes what happens at Bike Breakfast this way:

In case you haven’t ever attended the Bike Breakfast, it’s a drop-by event where anyone who bikes their way to work or school gets a free breakfast and other give-away bicycling items.  Bicycling aficionados and alternative transportation advocates can get together and talk about their commutes, riding, the rail trail network, and creating a modern, human-scale transportation environment. [from Jim’s email to the MassBike Pioneer Valley group, reprinted below in full with his permission.]

Seeing as how May 18 is quickly approaching, Jim could use your help making this year’s event the success it can be.

We could use  your help in making this event happen– from contacting bicycling advocacy organizations and speakers for the event, to making arrangements for publicity, sign-setting up, and also help on the day of the breakfast, getting things set up.

If you’re able to lend a hand, please email me at  jdesmond1 AT  aol.com with the type of assistance you can provide.

Bike Breakfast is going to be great. It’ll be even better with your help.

Jim’s email message:

I’ve volunteered to act as coordinator of the Northampton bike breakfast this year, which will take place:

Wednesday, May 18 from 7am to 10am on the Hampshire County Courthouse lawn.

If you’ve enjoyed coming to the breakfasts in years past, please consider pitching in to keep this great event happening.

(If you live in another western mass community and would like to pitch in there, you can also email me and I’ll do my best to put you in contact with organizers in your town.)

Thanks!  -Jim Desmond
