Pioneer Valley Home to World-Class Cyclist

Haven’t I said before that the Northampton, MA area is a great place to ride your bike?

Well, a certain world-class cyclo-cross racer agrees with me. A story in the Northampton Daily Hampshire Gazette tells of the success of a local rider.

“[Jeremy] Powers, 27, who owns a home on Davis Street [in Easthampton, MA], is one of the top cyclo-cross riders in the country. He has just come off one of his strongest years ever in the sport, taking titles (and jerseys) in both of the major domestic cyclo-cross series as well as a first place in the overall rankings put out by USA Cycling.

Why would a guy who is at the top of the cyclo-cross game live here in the Pioneer Valley?

Powers bought a house in Easthampton last year. He grew up in Connecticut, attended Westfield State College and has called Hadley home in the past. He said he likes Easthampton because several of his good friends live here, including cyclist and area cafe entrepreneur Makunda Feldman, and because the city is not far from Bradley International Airport, which make it convenient for all the traveling he does. Powers said he also likes area roads and trails, including the Manhan Rail Trail.

The reason I live here is because of the awesome roads,” he said. “I know every single road in the Valley.”[emphasis added]

Jeremy’s had quite a successful year racing cyclo-cross. You can follow him at his blog,  www.jeremypowers.missingsaddle.com. The article also reminds that several websites have begun webcasting live cyclo-cross races.

The Northampton area and Easthampton area have miles and miles of rail trails, serious hills to climb, quiet back country roads and lovely scenery to take in while you pedal in paradise. On top of that, there are terrific restaurants and cafe’s offering fresh local interestingly prepared foods for replenishing energy.  And have I mentioned the brew pubs?

If you are interested in getting started in cyclo-cross yourself, get in touch with the Northampton Cycling Club, which sponsors group rides, road races, events like Bike Fest and a cyclo-cross series for kids.

Come ride here. We’ve got something for every type of cyclist. You might even find yourself riding next to one of the top riders in the sport.

It sounds like Northampton is a great place to live & ride bikes. The local rail-trail scene sounds especially nice. Do you have any long rail-trails around there. I still haven’t ridden any MA bike trails, & I’d like to add it to my list, so if you or any of your subscribers has suggestions for lengthy & fun trails in MA that I could include on the trailsnet website & blog, I’d appreciate it.
By the way, I added the pedalparadise blog to the trailsnet blogroll.
