New Recreation Fields Coming

Northampton Media has a story up today about the City of Northampton getting a half million dollar grant:

“…to buy, design and start construction on the Florence Fields Recreation Area on Meadow Street.”

This site will include playing fields, a community garden, and other preserved lands. You can see a preliminary drawing of the fields at the Northampton Media page. When the project was first being discussed, there was some talk of exploring a connection with the rail trail in Look Park .

View from the rail trail.

Notice the bikes waiting for the trip home?

I hope a link to the park does appear in the final design. What better way to enhance opportunities for recreation and fitness than to have all of these facilities connect and complement each other? This happens at the skateboard park at Veteran’s Field off of West Street.

Could these fields provide a place for kids to meet up and ride their bikes to for impromptu baseball or soccer games without needing parents to drive them, or having to belong to a league?

Imagine that, kids hopping on their bikes to ride off to soccer practice.
