Progress on Easthampton trail extention

The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, has announced that the asbestos removal along the Manhan Rail Trail in Easthampton extension to the Southampton town line began last week.

From 1963 to 1992, Zonolite / W.R. Grace operated an exfoliation plant at the facility in Easthampton, Mass., producing attic insulation and Monokote fireproofing materials. W.R. Grace received vermiculite concentrate, containing amphibole asbestos fibers, from the Zonolite mine in Libby. Mont. W.R. Grace shipped the vermiculite concentrate by rail to the Easthampton facility

The Friends of the Manhan Rail Trail have a beautiful artist’s rendition map on their site which shows the current path and the extensions which are under construction. The asbestos removal is to be finished this Fall, and the paving of the trail is expected to be finished by next Spring. This will add about a mile to the current trail. The Friends group has been working on this for many years, I know they must be super excited to see this progress.
